Virtual Trial
Virtual Trial
Welcome to the Virtual Trial! We know that some people who are taking up law in school already do this in their classrooms on a regular basis: they are given a case to study, and are given positions: prosecution/plaintiff and the defendant. The two parties are then given a certain time frame in which they would prosecute or defend to the best of their abilities, and as such would be graded for their performance. But more important than the grades would be the kind of mental exercise that they are put through in the course of the activity.
We are attempting to replicate that in this section, without, of course, the grading. Every three months, we will be posting an “original” case for the visitors of this site to peruse, and it will be up to them to choose whether they will be defendant or prosecutor. Participants will be given one week to write up and submit their opening statements, and the best ones will be posted in this page. Afterwards, we will post more details of the case (witnesses, evidence, experts, etc.) for the participants to work with; each leg (lasting one to three weeks each) of the “trial” will have a winner. Two weeks before the end of the trial, closing statements must be submitted, and again, the winning statements will be posted, as will be the verdict.
We hope that this fun exercise helps foster a sense of healthy competition and logical thinking.
